Novel Review for Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

Then She Was Gone

Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was fifteen, the youngest of three. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic post-exams summer vacation, with her whole life ahead of her.

And then she was gone.

Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It’s been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie’s case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a café, no one is more surprised than Laurel at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she’s meeting Floyd’s daughters—and his youngest, Poppy, takes Laurel’s breath away.

Because looking at Poppy is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she’s tried so hard to put to rest begin to haunt Laurel anew. Where did Ellie go? Did she really run away from home, as the police have long suspected, or was there a more sinister reason for her disappearance? Who is Floyd, really? And why does his daughter remind Laurel so viscerally of her own missing girl?

My 4 star review:

This book is the perfect example of the rare ugliness that is in our world.
Elle goes to school and then never comes home.
The question is where is she?
Did she run away?
Is she ever coming back?
Then years later the police stumble across Elle's book bag and it was filled with her things from years ago.
Then the police find human remains.
Then her parents house get broken into and odd items are stolen.
Did Elle come home and steal random items? or Was this just a random break in?
What happens in this read will blow your mind. This book will have you wanting to stalk your children everywhere they go.
I absolutely recommend this read. It is so good!

A Novel Review for The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

The Hating Game

Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman hate each other. Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. Hate. And they have no problem displaying their feelings through a series of ritualistic passive aggressive maneuvers as they sit across from each other, executive assistants to co-CEOs of a publishing company. Lucy can’t understand Joshua’s joyless, uptight, meticulous approach to his job. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy’s overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and Pollyanna attitude.

Now up for the same promotion, their battle of wills has come to a head and Lucy refuses to back down when their latest game could cost her her dream job…But the tension between Lucy and Joshua has also reached its boiling point, and Lucy is discovering that maybe she doesn’t hate Joshua. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome

                    2) A person’s undoing

                   3) Joshua Templeman

Pretty Girls

#1 internationally bestselling author Karin Slaughter returns with a sophisticated and chilling psychological thriller of dangerous secrets, cold vengeance, and unexpected absolution, in which two estranged sisters must come together to find truth about two harrowing tragedies, twenty years apart, that devastate their lives.  Sisters. Strangers. Survivors.  More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia's teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.  Powerful, poignant, and utterly gripping, packed with indelible characters and unforgettable twists, Pretty Girls is a masterful thriller from one of the finest suspense writers working today.

My 5 star review

This is my first read from Karin Slaughter and it definitely will not be my last. I am completely at a loss for words and let's be honest that is rare for me.

All of those poor innocent girls. All of their families. The wondering and the hoping that they will eventually come home.

I had chills during this entire read and I was creeped out. I didnt even want to walk to my car at night, this book had me so scared.

I am sitting here trying to figure out how in the heck Karin Slaughter could come up with a story like this.

This read was unbelievable and I highly recommend this book!

A Novel Review for How It Ends by Catherine Lo

How It Ends

There are two sides to every story.  It’s friends-at-first-sight for Jessie and Annie, proving the old adage that opposites attract. Shy, anxious Jessie would give anything to have Annie’s beauty and confidence. And Annie thinks Jessie has the perfect life, with her close-knit family and killer grades. They're BFFs…until suddenly they're not.   Told through alternating points of view, How It Ends is a wildly fast but deeply moving read about a friendship in crisis. Set against a tumultuous sophomore year of bullying, boys and backstabbing, the novel shows what can happen when friends choose assumptions and fear over each other.

My 4 stars review

This book has been on my TBD list for a while now.

When I started this book I was not really sure how it was going to be. I mean two friend who get into a fight but no that was not this book at all.

You have Annie who is unhappy with her current situation. Her mother passed away and now her stepmother is very rude and mean to her.

Then you have Jess who suffers from Anxiety and depression but in the same breathe her mother is enabling her....in my opinion.

This book is about friendship and the struggles that people go through and the lessons they learn.

These two characters had to learn life lessons. One of them made a huge decision that will impact her life until the day she dies. The other learned to love herself and be free...and to stop worrying about what other people think.

I truly enjoyed this book and I totally recommend it.

Happy reading

Review for RoomHate by Penelope Ward

RoomHate

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right? Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me. When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise. The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago. The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match. I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house. The worst part? He didn’t come alone. I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection. The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more.

My 4 star review

I can tell you that this book was not what I expected!

I was completely shocked and I loved it!

Justin and Amelia were best friends for many years and then when Amelia was 15 she bolted. For years Justin hated Amelia for her leaving him without a word.

Then when Amelia's grandmother passed away she left her summer house to Amelia and Justin. In a way I believe her grandmother knew these two needed to mend their friendship.

Again this book did not turn out the way I thought it would. I enjoyed all of the banter between these two characters. I will say that there is so much more to these characters.

Omg and when Amelia moved into the summer house full time...she was a wreak with a two month old. My heart broke for her, because I was that mom. I truly enjoyed this book!

While reading this book Daughters by John Mayer kept playing on repeat. It was in this book and honestly it is the perfect song for this book.

The Light we Lost

Lucy is faced with a life-altering choice. But before she can make her decision, she must start her story—their story—at the very beginning. When they meet again a year later, it seems fated—perhaps they’ll find life’s meaning in each other. But then Gabe becomes a photojournalist assigned to the Middle East and Lucy pursues a career in New York. What follows is a thirteen-year journey of dreams, desires, jealousies, betrayals, and, ultimately, of love. Was it fate that brought them together? Is it choice that has kept them away? Their journey takes Lucy and Gabe continents apart, but never out of each other’s hearts.

My 5 star review

I just finished this book and my heart is literally beating so flipping fast.

Wow....

I don't know what to think. My heart hurts right now. Lucy is a fierce woman and my heart broke for her. I am team Lucy but now honestly I am not sure what team I need to be on.

I don't why and how she could so something like that to Darren. I mean hell how could she do that?! Does he even know that truth?!

Then you have Gabe! Gabe is this crazy awesome smart guy who is so darn selfish. He wanted Lucy but then he wanted and need to prove something to himself. So he just up and left her, he broke her.

Oh and let's not forget Darren. I am not sure I can say anything bad about him...well yes I can he loved Lucy so damn much! And I believe he got the crap end of the deal.

I wanted to jump into this book and slap Lucy, Gabe, and Darren!

Then I started to think, what if my life was different and my heart hurt. I couldnt imagine my life without my husband. To me what I had in the past with past individuals are in the past. Done and over with, that is why it is the past.

I will tell you that this book is incredible. Even though these characters are so loveable and frustrating.

My 4 star review:

First off thank you Instagram! If I wasn't for the countless people on there posting this book I would of never known about it. So naturally I ran to the bookstore and grabbed me a copy.

I feel in love after the first chapter. I mean love at first sight! When Laurie and the guy at the bus stops eyes locked my heart sank! I felt the butterflies too! I got goosebumps. Goosebumps people!!!

I had no idea that she would put her love life on hold for so long just to try and find that one guy! Like that is sweet, romantic, and crazy all at the same time.

Then... BOOM!!

Her best friend meet this guy named Jack at her work and now he is her boyfriend. Eeeek!!!

Now there is a lot going on here. You got relationships, break ups, marriages, and a divorce. This book will definitely give you the feels and I will definitely make you think....

What if?!

Go and grab this book, I promise you will love this book!!

Novel Review for Eleanor Oliphant is completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.   But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.  Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon,  Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .     The only way to survive is to open your heart.

My 4 star review

This book broke my heart. I have no idea how and why a mother would be so cruel to their child.

Eleanor is not like your average thirty year old woman. Hell she is better than average. She is her own person and she doesn't care what other people think about her.

I can honestly say that I adore Eleanor. She has been through so much and yet she is still standing semi strong.

Raymond is Eleanor's co worker and they end up being really good friends. He helped her with something huge! One could even say that he saved her.

I really thought that the ending would be different and I totally wanted to girl to get the guy or the guy get the girl...

But this ending was perfection! Because at the end of this book Eleanor became a completely different stronger version of herself. And let's face it that is a million times better than the girl getting to guy or the guy getting the girl!

While reading this book Maroon 5 She will be loved kept playing over and over again in my mind.

Enjoy Bookies

Holy mother of pearl!

Colleen Hoover you get me!! You get me every darn time with your books!

First off I got this book from my local Library and I was on the hold list for 6 weeks. I finally picked it up and read it in no time.

There is a lot of drama but real life drama in this book. Also I will be honest and tell you that I had no clue about this book...but I knew I had to read it.

Now...Asa, Sloan, and Luke, and Ryan! These characters are all trapped up in some lies, drama, and a bunch of illegal stuff.

I absolutely loves this book and i was hanging on the edge of my sit with each turning page. It was Brilliant and a total page turner!

Review for Someone Like You by Alexandra Silva

Someone Like You

Dorian Anson is my friend. She's the only person who's ever questioned my smiles. My jokes. The one liners that have our friends shaking their heads at me.
I've lived my life on those smiles. They never failed me, until her.

I wasn't counting on her when I designed my front. I never imagined the possibility of someone like her coming into my life.

The wild hair, the kind smile and those eyes that see everything.

She was the girl with the beautiful soul, pretty face and whole heart. But hearts aren't made to stay whole.

I watched hers break. I watched her tears fall. I watched as her world tilted on its axis and shattered at her feet.

This girl.

She sees me, all parts of me—the truths I try to hide, the secrets I bury. What's mine and what's not.

She sees it all, and I can only hope the truth isn't too much. That she won't walk away.

That she won't leave me...alone.

We both have a past. We have ghosts. We have fears.

I'm hoping that somehow in the end, we'll have each other too.

I've never needed anyone before her, and I know I'll never want anyone else after her.

There is no one like her.

My pretty girl.

Dorian.

My 4 star review:

I didn't read books one and two but I am totally ok with that. I am not sure if they can be read separately or not. But I did it!

Jake is one of the main characters. He is a doctor, somewhat of a manwhore, an amazing guy, and he adores the people he let's into his life. But there is a side to Jake that no ones knows except for his sister Eleanor and his best friend Jamie.

Dorian is another main character. She is a single mother to a child under the age of ten. Her fiance left her and he passed away.

This character is my favorite! She is dealing with lose on her own terms. It has been years she has never moved on. I could not even imagine what I would do or how I could even move on.

Then there is Jake. One night of drinking and flirting and they both cross the line of no return.

This book was super cute and I really enjoyed it. I love that it isn't your typical book. This is something that can happen to your best friend.

Also the book was written so well, it was as if I was a character in the story and they were all my friends chatting.

Super good!

And don't judge but Someone Like you by Adele was legitly playing in my head reading this book.

Fixing Him

One summer.

Three months.

Ninety days spent learning every inch of Sam Matthews’ body. We agreed to no strings when our time was up. We promised we could both handle this. I lied. Hello Sam!

I loved this book!!!

This book has so many loveable characters in it. They will have you laughing and wishing you loved in their cute little town with them.

Fixing Him is definitely a feel good book for me. I mean really there is nothing in this book that you will not love.

Sam is this hot contractor guy who is in his thirties and Montana is this twenty two year old woman who has an old soul.

When these two met....let's just say one is trying to stay away while the other is trying to test out her best flirting skills.

This book has me giggling and it also had my cheeks glowing red. I love me some Sam!

I also can't wait to read the next book Fixing Her.

Review for The Paris Wedding by Charlotte Nash

The Paris Wedding

When is it right to  follow your heart?

From the plains of rural Australia to Paris, the City of Love, lose yourself in this touching and romantic story by the bestselling author of THE HORSEMAN Ten years ago, Rachael West chose not to move to Sydney with high-school sweetheart Matthew.

Instead she stayed on the family wheat farm, caring for her seriously ill mother and letting go of her dreams. Now, Matthew is marrying someone else. And Rachael is invited to the wedding, a lavish affair in Paris, courtesy of the flamboyant family of Matthew's fiancée - a once-in-a-lifetime celebration at someone else's expense in Europe's most romantic city.

She is utterly unprepared for what the week brings. Friendships will be upended, secrets will be revealed - and on the eve of the wedding, Rachael is faced with an impossible dilemma: should she give up on the promise of love, or destroy another woman's life for a chance at happiness?

My 5 star reaview

I listened to the audiobook and I was zoned in the entire time.

Rachel is a young woman who put her life on hold to take care of her sick mother and the farm. She loved her mother and was fine doing it. But what she really didnt realize is the life she missed but never knew she wanted. Matthew was the love of Rachel's life.

They separated once Matthew went to college because she could not follow him, she needed to be there for her mother.

Then 10 years later Rachel receives a wedding invitation in the mail and it isnt just any invitation. This invite is to Matthew's wedding and it is all expense paid to Paris.

Now they say that Paris is the place to find love but they never say what kind of love. I believe that Rachel can find just the right love that her soul needs and she does just that.

Now while listening to this book I got all kinds of frustrated with Rachel because I knew she was make some horrible mistakes...but she had to figure them out on her own.

This book will lift you up when you didnt even know you needed to be lifted. This book will make you take a break and stop to smell the roses... in other words this book will make you think more of the things that matter and less of the things we can't change.

Happy reading..

Review for The Perfect Alibi by Phillip Margolin

https://booksreviewes.blogspot.com/2019/03/new-review-for-perfect-alibi-by-phillip.html
A young woman accuses a prominent local college athlete of rape. Convicted with the help of undisputable DNA evidence, the athlete swears his innocence and threatens both his lawyer and his accuser as he's sent to prison. Not long after, there's another rape and the DNA test shows that the same person committed both rapes—which is seemingly impossible since the man convicted of the first rape was in prison at the time of the second one. Now, the convicted athlete, joined by a new lawyer, is granted a new trial and bail. Shortly thereafter, his original lawyer disappears and his law partner is murdered.

Robin Lockwood is a young lawyer with a prestigious small law firm and a former MMA fighter who helped pay for Yale Law School with her bouts. She is representing the victim of the first rape for her civil lawsuit against her rapist, who is now convinced the rapist is stalking her and trying to intimidate her. At the same time, another client is up on a murder charge—one that should be dismissed as self-defense—but the D.A. trying the case is determined to bring it to trial. Now she has to mastermind two impossible cases, trying to find the hidden truth that links the two of them.

This is my first Phillip Margolin book and wow, just wow!

This book is full of characters and they range from good to pure evil.

I can honestly say that I could not put my kindle down at all.

The title says it all....The Perfect Alibi! While reading this book I had no idea what the outcome would be.

I had no idea who killed who or if he even raped the girl.

I mean my mind is still blown away on what happened in this story.

Again I mean wow!

This book is super freaking cute!

They are everything you want in a book character. Genuine, amazing, kind, loving, real, honest, and so much more.

Nic is a Male escort and I am not judging...we all have a right to do what we want and when we want it.

Elle is a young woman that had so many self esteem issues but they were caused by her ex boyfriend.

Omg there is a scene at the wedding and Elle's ex Jeremy was there and he said this thing to her.....if I was there I would of shown this fool cray cray! Times ten!!! (My husband over here is shaking his head at me)

Wherever You Are is the story of a marriage after a spouse is forever changed by a catastrophic event. It is a story of redefining life with disability and discovering the real truth of love and marriage."

My Two Cents:

In "Wherever You Are," Cynthia Lim and her husband seem to lead a pretty good life. When a sudden health situation leaves her husband with a brain injury where one of the major symptoms severe short term memory loss, Lim discovers her own resilience and strength to come to terms with her and her husband's "new normal." This is a powerful memoir!

This memoir goes through everything that Cynthia and Perry, her husband, go through. Everything is covered from what happened to Perry to Cynthia having to navigate a new life and figure out how best she can care for her beloved husband. Caretaking is a very difficult job under any circumstances but Lim captures how difficult it is to be a caretaker for someone who once was self-sufficient. Lim also has to learn to be a partner to someone with whom she once had a very equal partnership with but that is no longer possible.

The writing is good. This is a hard subject and I did find myself wanting more detail on thoughts and feelings happening throughout the events in the book rather than just what was happening. This is a heart-wrenching story and I think it will be helpful to so many to have such a great example of strength!
